Home Renovation: Choosing the Ideal Plasterboard for Internal Walls

If you are planning a home renovation project, you should think about upgrading your internal walls. This type of improvement work will allow you to divide the interior space and create rooms for special applications. There are numerous building materials that are ideal for use in interior wall construction. One of the most advantageous options is plasterboard. Basically, this product is manufactured using gypsum and lining paper, so it is an economical choice for your home. Moreover, the material can be modified during manufacturing to induce special performance properties. Here is a description of the primary types of plasterboard to consider for your wall renovation project.

Standard Plasterboard

The standard plasterboard is also known as a wall board, and it is an ideal choice for building normal living space walls. As mentioned earlier, this is manufactured using a compacted layer of gypsum plaster. This is sandwiched between building grade lining paper to stabilise the plaster for long-term use. This wall material does not have any special properties in terms of insulation, structural performance and fire rating. However, the quality and durability of the wall will depend on the thickness of the gypsum layer and lining paper. Thicker plasterboard will be able to withstand adverse conditions without accelerated damage.

Vapour Barrier Plasterboard

Standard plasterboard should not be installed in parts of the house where the product will be exposed to constant moisture. If vapour is absorbed by the lining paper and gypsum, it will cause structural deterioration of the walls. Therefore, you should purchase moisture resistant plasterboard for kitchen, bathroom and laundry room applications. Vapour barrier boards have a metallic film incorporated into the standard design. It will prevent moisture from infiltrating the plaster by acting as a protective shield. Alternatively, you should inquire about plasterboards with gypsum that has been modified to resist damage by water. For example, some manufacturers incorporate silicone additives or special reinforcing glass particles to reject water absorption.

Insulating Plasterboard

You should consider using acoustic plasterboard if you are creating a designated room for working or studying. This type of product has a gypsum core of higher than usual density to prevent transmission of sound vibrations. You should note that the installation method will determine the level of insulation achieved. For instance, usage of mineral wool will further decrease sound transmission. If you want thermal insulation, choose thicker plasterboard with an insulating layer of foam.
